Fund.me: Mobile Social Network Startup Just.me Raises $2.7 Million

justmeJust.me, a stealth startup incubated by Palo Alto, California-based Archimedes Labs has raised $2.7 million in Series A funding according to an SEC filing. The company earlier secured $600,000 in seed financing from SV Angel, Google Ventures, True Ventures, Betaworks and a couple of other high-profile angel investors such as Don Dodge, Michael Parekh and TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington. I reached out to Keith Teare, CEO and sole founder of just.me (and also technically also a co-founder of TechCrunch), who declined to comment on the financing round.

New "Hobbit" production video shows captures cast and crew (omg!)

Cast members (L-R) Billy Boyd (Pippin ), Dominic Monaghan (Merry), Liv Tyler (Arwen), Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Sean Astin (Sam) arrive for the world premiere of Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington December 1, 2003. REUTERS/Anthony Phelps

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Welcome back to Hobbiton.

The fifth, 12-minute production video capturing the making of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit," was posted Saturday on The Hobbit Blog, the official site for the two upcoming movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novel. The first film, "An Unexpected Journey," arrives in theaters December 14.

The new video captures Jackson and his crew on location throughout New Zealand. It sheds light on the logistics of location shooting and offers peeks at some of the scenic spots where filming is taking place.

"After 110 days in the studio, we finally make it out into the sunshine. It's weird when you come back to a place you literally thought you'd never see again," Jackson says as he surveys the reconstructed Hobbiton.

Elijah Wood also admires the village, recalling how his first trip there was 11 years ago, when he was 19 years old.

"There are so many feelings of nostalgia and history," he says.

The video also features appearances by "Lord of the Rings" franchise regulars Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis.

"I just wish I could move into one of these Hobbit holes," Jackson says toward the end. "This would be an absolutely idyllic place to live. This is the sort of place I would happily retire to."

Set Up and Get to Know Your New iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch [Merrychristmahanukwanzaakkah]

Set Up and Get to Know Your New iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch / holidaysYou've just been given an iDevice: a magical entity that bestows the gift of more apps than you can fathom. We'll help you make sense of it all with some great apps, tips, and tricks for your shiny new Apple toy.

Title image remixed from an original by Air0ne (Shutterstock).

Before you dive in, here are a few things you should do with your new iDevice first:

  • Update to the Lastest Version of iOS - There's a decent chance your new iDevice isn't running the latest version of iOS, even if it's just a very minor upgrade that's necessary. Before you sync for the first time, check for updates in iTunes or in your iDevice's Settings app, if your device is running iOS 5. If there's an update available, iTunes (or your phone) should tell you automatically but it's always good to double check.
  • Get to Know iOS 5 - Once you've updated, you ought to know what you're in for. We can teach you everything you need to know about iOS 5 in 7 minutes. If you want to go more in-depth, you can learn how to configure notification center, create contact-specific vibrations and LED notifications, hide the newsstand "app" in a folder, set up typing shortcuts, add some beautiful settings shortcuts to your home screen, and make your iPhone read any text aloud on demand.
  • Sign Up For Free Find My iPhone - You no longer need to pay to use Apple's great Find My iPhone app. Just download it from the iTunes App Store and follow the signup instructions. You'll need to create a MobileMe account to get it to work but you will not have to pay for it. Once you're all set up, you'll be able to find your lost or stolen iPhone much more easily.
  • Organize Your Home Screen - When you start downloading a bunch of apps, your home screen is going to get cluttered very quickly. Stay ahead of the game and start organizing. As you download apps it'll be easier to keep track of where every app is and will be stored. Check out these reader tips for some ideas.

NFL: Tim Tebow meets prep quarterback amputee

Orchard Park, N.Y. ? Tim Tebow, meet Jacob Rainey.

The Denver quarterback whose on-field comebacks have intrigued the nation, met Rainey, whose had part of his right leg amputated after an injury in September, before the Broncos faced the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.

"I?m excited, I guess, to meet someone that famous," said Rainey, the highly rated Virginia prep quarterback who was hurt in a scrimmage. It?s nice that he can take time out of his day to help other people out. I appreciate it."

Rainey was flown with his family to Buffalo to watch the Christmas Eve game by Tebow?s Wish 15 foundation, which has brought a young fan to every Broncos game this year. Rainey?s story has been inspirational and heartbreaking.

Regarded as a can?t-miss major college prospect out of Woodberry Forrest School, Rainey suffered a severe knee injury that also severed an artery in his right leg. He underwent several operations until it was finally determined doctors had no choice but to amputate part of the leg.

It?s his outlook and courage facing a life-changing incident that has so inspired family, friends and teammates.

The fact that he?s taken his injury in stride, not laying blame at anyone or adapting a "why me?" attitude has drawn the attention of the likes of Alabama coach Nick Saban, who sent him a red Crimson Tide jersey with the message "Keep Fighting" on it.

Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews also sent him an autographed jersey.

"I don?t feel that inspirational," he said. "There?s no point in complaining about it. It is what it is."

On Saturday, Tebow trotted off the field and met Rainey and his family just after the Broncos finished pregame warm-ups. The Denver QB hugged Rainey?s entire contingent, and the two conversed for several minutes on the sideline.

"We?re just impressed with Tim, already having the foundation at such a young age, giving back to the community," said Rainey?s dad, Lee. "He understands what it?s all about ? not just wins and losses.

"We?ve always been big Tim Tebow fans before this," the elder Rainey said. "Now that he?s reached out to bring Jacob up to the game, he made the effort to make a difference."

Icebreaker reaches stricken Russian fishing vessel (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? A South Korean polar research ship on Monday reached a leaking Russian fishing vessel that has been stuck in the frigid waters off Antarctica for the past 10 days, New Zealand officials said.

The Sparta, with 32 crew on board, hit underwater ice on Dec. 16 that tore a 1-foot (30-centimeter) hole in its hull and caused it to list at 13 degrees. Several rescue ships had been hampered by heavy ice in the Ross Sea off the northern Antarctica coast before the icebreaker Araon finally pushed through and reached the Sparta on Monday, New Zealand Rescue Coordination Center spokeswoman Rosalie Neilson said.

The arrival was a relief to the crew, which had been desperately pumping out near-frozen sea water while awaiting rescue. At one point, more than half of those on board were forced onto life rafts.

The crew is made up of 15 Russians, 16 Indonesians and one Ukrainian.

A New Zealand air force cargo plane had previously made two parachute drops of pumps and hull patching gear that had helped keep the single-hulled Sparta from sinking.

Search and rescue coordinator Mike Roberts said the South Korean vessel was alongside Sparta transferring fuel to it to change its trim ? or how it's sitting in the water ? so the bow rises clear of the sea, exposing the damaged area of hull.

Roberts said crew from both ships will attempt to weld a "doubler plate" over the hole ? one external and a second inside. If successful, the repair is expected to make Sparta seaworthy, and should enable it to be escorted by Araon out of the sea ice to open water, he said in a statement. Roberts did not say how long the repair attempt was expected to take.

Weather in the area was calm, which should help the repair operation, he said.

The survival drama on the edge of the Antarctic ice shelf is taking place about 2,200 miles (3,700 kilometers) southeast of New Zealand.

GoPro HD Hero 2 review

GoPro has been in the HD action sports and helmet cam game for some time now, with its Hero line proving a popular sight atop many a daredevil's lid. Now, you can add HD Hero 2 ($300) to the ever growing list of options now, as this is the latest (and they say greatest) incarnation to date. Last time we tested the Hero Original -- as it's now called -- against the Contour HD, but now we're pitting new against old, like for like, side by side. Not only will we discover how the new boy stands up against the camera it effectively usurps, we'll also see how it fares out in the field. Above all, we'll see whether a smattering of new recording options, and a supposedly "two times sharper" image make it worth the extra dollars.
