CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? A 6-ton NASA satellite on a collision course with Earth clung to space Friday, apparently flipping position in its ever-lower orbit and stalling its death plunge.

The old research spacecraft was targeted to crash through the atmosphere sometime Friday night or early Saturday morning, putting the U.S. back in the potential crosshairs, although most of the satellite should burn up during re-entry.

"It just doesn't want to come down," said Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

McDowell said the satellite's delayed demise demonstrates how unreliable predictions can be. That said, "the best guess is that it will still splash in the ocean, just because there's more ocean out there."

Until Friday, increased solar activity was causing the atmosphere to expand and the 35-foot satellite to free fall more quickly. But late Friday morning, NASA said the sun was no longer the major factor in the rate of descent and that the satellite's position, shape or both had changed by the time it slipped down to a 100-mile orbit.

"In the last 24 hours, something has happened to the spacecraft," said NASA orbital debris scientist Mark Matney.

NASA cautioned there was now a slim chance any surviving debris would land in the United States. Earlier this week, NASA said North America would be in the clear.

"It is still too early to predict the time and location of re-entry with any certainty," NASA said in a statement.

The Aerospace Corp., which tracks space debris, estimates the strike will happen sometime between about 6 p.m. and 4 a.m. EDT, which would make a huge difference in where the debris might wind up. Those late-night, early morning passes show the satellite flying over parts of the United States.

Any surviving wreckage is expected to be limited to a 500-mile swath.

The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS, will be the biggest NASA spacecraft to crash back to Earth, uncontrolled, since the post-Apollo 75-ton Skylab space station and the more than 10-ton Pegasus 2 satellite, both in 1979.

Russia's 135-ton Mir space station slammed through the atmosphere in 2001, but it was a controlled dive into the Pacific.

Some 26 pieces of the UARS satellite ? representing 1,200 pounds of heavy metal ? are expected to rain down somewhere. The biggest surviving chunk should be no more than 300 pounds.

Earthlings can take comfort in the fact that no one has ever been hurt by falling space junk ? to anyone's knowledge ? and there has been no serious property damage. NASA put the chances that somebody somewhere on Earth would get hurt at 1-in-3,200. But any one person's odds of being struck were estimated at 1-in-22 trillion, given there are 7 billion people on the planet.

"Keep in mind that we have bits of debris re-entering the atmosphere every single day," Matney said in brief remarks broadcast on NASA TV.

In any case, finders definitely aren't keepers.

Any surviving wreckage belongs to NASA, and it is against the law to keep or sell even the smallest piece. There are no toxic chemicals on board, but sharp edges could be dangerous, so the space agency is warning the public to keep hands off and call police.

The $740 million UARS was launched in 1991 from space shuttle Discovery to study the atmosphere and the ozone layer. NASA shut UARS down in 2005 after lowering its orbit to hurry its end. A potential satellite-retrieval mission was ruled out following the 2003 shuttle Columbia disaster, and NASA did not want the satellite hanging around orbit posing a debris hazard.

Space junk is a growing problem in low-Earth orbit. More than 20,000 pieces of debris, at least 4 inches in diameter, are being tracked on a daily basis. These objects pose a serious threat to the International Space Station.

LONDON (Reuters) ? Researchers who developed ground-breaking leukemia drugs, discovered dendrimers and delved into the intricacies of what Einstein dubbed "spooky action" are among Thomson Reuters 2011 top tips to win Nobel prizes for science.

Nobel prediction expert David Pendlebury's annual forecast is made using the company's "Web of Knowledge" data on how often a scientist's published papers are used and cited as a basis for further investigation by other researchers.

"In the scientific community, citations ... can serve as another form of peer review," said Pendlebury, a citation analyst at Thomson Reuters research services.

"The more cited a scientist is, the more well-respected the author tends to be amongst his or her peers, which can be a predictor of awards like the Nobel prize."

Winners of the 2011 Nobels are due to be announced in early October and at least one of the picks from Pendlebury's prediction list has won every year. He makes predictions for the four science prizes, not for Peace and Literature.

Among Thomson Reuters favorites for the Medicine prize are three scientists from the United States -- Brian Druker, Nicholas Lydon and Charles Sawyers -- who discovered and developed ground-breaking new drugs called imatinib and dasatinib for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).

So-called tyrosine kinase inhibitor drugs such as imatinib, marketed by Swiss drugmaker Novartis as Glivec or Gleevec, and dasatinib, sold by Bristol-Myers Squibb as Sprycel, have transformed treatment of CML and are credited with turning it from a fatal cancer into a manageable condition.

"This was a fundamental discovery in medicine ... with a fantastic result which is often referred to in terms like 'magic bullet'," said Pendlebury. "It has really given a new paradigm for the treatment of cancer."

He noted that Druker, Lydon and Sawyers won the 2009 Lasker award, widely considered a good predictor of Nobel winners, for their work. "It seems to me that all things are in alignment for a Nobel prize for this discovery."

WILL THE NOBELS SPOOK EINSTEIN?

Also on Pendlebury's Medicine list are Robert Langer and Joseph Vacanti, who pioneered work in regenerative medicine and who in 2005 founded the company InVivo Therapeutics to develop stem cell treatments for people with spinal cord injuries.

For Chemistry, Pendlebury points to Jean Frechet and Donald Tomalia, who discovered dendrimers -- a class of tiny synthetic compounds that can be designed for use in medicine, electronics and materials industries -- and to Martin Karplus for pioneering simulations of the molecular dynamics of biomolecules.

Nobels often go to groups of three researchers, so French scientist Alain Aspect, American John Clauser and Austrian Anton Zeilinger may be in with a chance of the Physics prize for their work on quantum entanglement, a notion that an exasperated Albert Einstein once described as "spooky action at a distance."

Quantum entanglement involves the theory that particles can be connected in such a way that changing the state of one instantly affects the other, even when they are miles apart.

Entanglement plays an important role in the development of super-fast quantum computers, which scientists believe could outperform conventional computers by being able to test many possible solutions to a problem at once.

Aspect, Clauser and Zeilinger confirmed the entanglement phenomenon in a series of sophisticated experiments during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, and in 2010 won the Wolf Prize in Physics for their work.

"While a full description of the kind that Einstein wanted is still not in anybody's pocket, these experiments have been fundamental in physics in the 20th century," said Pendlebury.

"They have confirmed spookiness at a distance. And I think Einstein would continue to be annoyed that there is not a better explanation for how this occurs."

The Bureau of Reclamation's Yuma Area Office is entering into a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with Envirock, Inc. to explore whether sludge from the Yuma Desalting Plant (YDP) can be used in a new "green" concrete mix formulation. The mix is designed to incorporate industrial waste products into a concrete that is expected to be lighter and stronger than commercially available formulations. The sludge consists primarily of calcium carbonate, which is used as a soil supplement on farm fields in some parts of the United States.

A successful project could reduce YDP operating costs by up to $245,000 per year. The plant uses lime in its pretreatment operations, and at full capacity can generate up to 131,000 tons of lime sludge per year. Reclamation maintains a system to dispose of this sludge, so if a process is developed to reuse it, the agency could avoid future costs of disposal, as well as costs to expand or rehabilitate the disposal facilities. The annualized capital savings could exceed $1 million per year.

The technology being evaluated is a type of cement which can contain/recycle up to 95% of a wide variety of industrial and post-consumer waste streams such as raw filler materials, including lime sludges, sewage sludges, brines, mercury wastes, Class C and F fly ash, and wood wastes. Part of the agreement includes Reclamation's Materials Engineering and Research Laboratory in Denver mixing samples into various formulations and then testing the formulations for durability and wearability.

Should the project be viable, it could more broadly benefit the nation's water treatment industry by helping to reduce operating costs and improve sustainability. Lime softening is used extensively in water treatment processes and is estimated to add 7-10% to the cost to treat the water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that water treatment facilities dispose of 6.8 million tons a year of sludge solids.

Assuming an Olympic-sized swimming pool holds 600,000 gallons, enough sludge is produced each year to fill 28,300 pools. Finding a way to recycle these waste materials into a commercially marketable resource can reduce the volume of material that needs to be disposed, enhancing the sustainability of water treatment technologies and helping Reclamation to achieve its water delivery mission and obligations.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? Inside a storefront in downtown Little Rock's busy River Market district is an art exhibit that brings to the surface the emotions felt by the victims of a dark chapter in U.S. history ? paintings, sculpture and drawings by inmates of a Japanese internment camp.

The works were created at the Rohwer Relocation Center in southeast Arkansas, one of 10 camps set up to hold Japanese detainees who were forced from their homes after the U.S. entered World War II.

The pieces, on display through Nov. 26, evoke a range of emotions. Some focus on fences and watchtowers. Others are propaganda posters for the U.S. war effort. Others are fashion sketches, showing the shoulder pads and thin waists that were in vogue at the time. The exhibit is called "The Art of Living: Japanese American Creative Experience at Rohwer."

The works were preserved by Jamie Vogel, a teacher at the Rowher camp. Vogel died in 1994 and willed her collection to a friend, Rosalie Gould, who last year donated the works to the Butler Center.

The approximately 125 works on display represent fraction of what's in the trove that Gould donated.

People entering the gallery space first see photographs of the camp, including murals depicting camp life that were painted by inmates, proudly standing by their work. Then comes the rest of the art.

The camp, now a National Historic Landmark, held more than 8,000 people and the works illustrate the diversity that comes with a group that large, even if they have a common story.

On the walls are portraits, landscapes and still life paintings. In display cases are small painted birds carved from scrap wood, art from cypress knees, sandals fashioned from fabric and wood and a homemade book made from cloth and paper. A woman's face is painted on a pecan. One portrait is of a young man who looks like he's furious.

Some works are realistic, others are impressionistic and some are in traditional Japanese style.

The cypress knees ? part of the root structure of cypress trees ? were used as decoration outside the doorways of camp buildings, and the carved birds offered inmates a way to make some pocket money. Once it was clear that the inmates weren't a threat, many were allowed to travel outside the gates for school or work. While out, they'd sell the birds to townspeople, who would wear them as pins.

The birds are remarkably well preserved and include some local specimens.

Nathania Sawyer, who organized the show, said camp residents would use Audubon prints as models, as well as National Geographic magazine. Inmates in other camps gained a reputation for similar birds, as well.

Some of the works show the unhappy conditions in which the inmates were kept, dismal winter scenes full of mud puddles, leafless trees and buildings tacked together from coarse wood. But others show bright landscapes and conveyed the sense that the detainees identified more with the U.S. than their ancestral land.

"Most of the people who went to the internment camps, more than two-thirds of them, were born in America," Sawyer said. "They thought of themselves as Americans."

That's quite clear in the propaganda posters. One says "Lets Lick Hitler with War Bonds," and includes a caricature of the dictator. Another touts the Boy Scouts.

Some men from the camp were members of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, one of the most decorated units in the European theater.

Butler Center Director David Stricklin said it's moving to see what those unjustly captured people created.

"There is nothing like walking up to this painting (by) somebody who was uprooted and dropped into the middle of the Delta," Stricklin said.

The camp was one of two in the area and was on a miserable piece of land when it opened in 1942. By the time it closed in 1945, the detainees had cleared the land and made it farmable.

The skills some of the internees brought is illustrated by a toolbox that is on display.

Among the 22 different tools are chisels, awls, a plane, and cutters that were used for carving. Next to the tools is what at first glance appears to be an ordinary wooden folding chair with a canvas seat. Two horizontal back slats feature delicate, polished carvings.

"When you look at this you realize there were some amazing talents," Sawyer said.

Many of the artists never picked up a brush or a carving tool again after leaving the camp, busy as they were trying to reorganize their lives, he said.

"That's one of the shames of this," Sawyer said.
