"Having cancer has been an amazing yet horrible journey," she said. "Yet every journey has an end."

Talia passed away on July 16, at 11:22 a.m, after battling neuroblastoma.

Now her father, Marc Winthrop, has found volunteer organization Band of Parents, which helps to fund research for new therapies for neuroblastoma. "At that moment, our founding members realized they could make a difference and a short time later, about 100 families of children in treatment for neuroblastoma came together to form The Band of Parents," says the organization's website.

Winthrop says that one of his own pet projects will be getting world-class care for all children, regardless of their parents' insurance statuses or income.

Neuroblastoma?is a childhood cancer that develops from immature nerve cells. The cancer cells mutate and multiply out of control. The initial genetic mutation that causes neuroblastoma is still unclear at the moment.

Winthrop has used his tragedy and turned it into a positive motive to help find a cure for neuroblastoma. He wants for children everywhere to be able to get the best care, regardless of their income status or regardless of insurance.

He also plans to advocate for more research in order to understand and treat this deadly disease; he believe that the only way to do this is with more funds. "The biggest thing I've done is pulled together parent groups and made very significant grants to Memorial Sloane-Kettering for Neuroblastoma," he told the?Daily News.

"Talia left her handprionts and footprings on the world," said her sister Mattia in a YouTube video after Talia had passed away.

Fortunately, Bitdefender looks to bolster the category's ranks with Mechanic, a free utility capable of optimizing system memory, deleting digital footprints, and offering sound advice to keep your machine in shape. Mechanic is a solid tool to have in your back pocket, but it's not a thorough system-scrubber like CCleaner for Mac.

A Defensive Stance
Unlike other OS X system-enhancing utilities like CCleaner, Mechanic has an interface that's particularly welcoming to novice users. Mechanic's easy-to-navigate four-category layout is designed to get you started quickly with the Free Memory, Privacy, Stability, and Advice sections. Let's break 'em down.

Free Memory is designed to clear cached data. Clicking it displays the amount of system RAM (and the amount that's active, inactive, and free). If your system needs a cleaning, the green "Free Memory" icon will be clickable; if not, you'll be unable to click it. Computer users who aren't keen on tinkering will appreciate this streamlined feature, but those who would rather dig in and clean as they please may frown at the inflexibility.

Privacy, designed to remove traces of your computing activity, offers more flexibility. You can delete Web browser information (last session, browsing history, cookies, etc.) as well as application information (such as QuickTime's recent items, Dropbox cache, etc.). Mechanic gives you the option to eliminate the items individually or in one fell swoop?I liked that I was able to delete my browser history with just a click without dipping into browser options.

If your apps are on the up-and-up, Mechanic won't display any problematic programs. In fact, the box will be blank?I'd prefer if it said "All clear" or some other positive affirmation rather than showing an empty box.

Advice gives you, well, advice. When I clicked the Advice icon, Mechanic suggested that I turn on my firewall "for increased security." I found this very useful as I didn't realize that my Mac's firewall was deactivated. If you have a Mac that's giving you lots of problems, you may want to access the Advice section before doing anything else.

Despite those positives, Mechanic has a handful of notable missing features. Unfortunately, Mechanic doesn't let you perform actions you'll find in full-fledged tune-up programs such as uninstalling applications, freeing up hard drive space, repairing permissions, or scheduling cleanings. Those are standard-issue features in the majority of computer tune-up programs. Mechanic is, instead, a very basic tool that lets you perform quick hits. You should check out CCleaner if you'd like an app that offers a deeper dive.

Tuning Up
Mechanic by Bitdefender may not possess the wide range of system-improving features found in the likes of CCleaner, but users who want a very quick system tweak will find it a useful tool. And, hey, it's free! Give it a download and give your Mac a booster shot.

Terrell Davis continues to get two questions:

"Why aren't you in the Pro Football Hall of Fame?"

"Will you ever get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame?"

Davis answers both in low-key, nonbitter style.

"I don't think I'll get into the Hall through the regular voting procedure. Too much time has passed since I left the game," he told me last week via telephone.

"But I do have a chance of making it by vote of the veterans committee. That would be quite an honor.

"I didn't start playing football to win awards. I played because I loved the game.

"Now I've got another career going strong ? and it still involves football."

Davis recently signed a two-year contract with the NFL Network as an analyst and reporter, a deal that will give him a much higher profile than he had during his previous time (2006-09) with the network.

He will be a major part of "Inside Training Camp Live" beginning Friday (8-11 a.m.) and will appear regularly on the prime-time show "NFL Total Access" (5-6 p.m.), also premiering this month.

A key date for Davis: Aug. 2, when he will report from Broncos training camp.

"I'm really looking forward to that visit," he said. "I fly into Denver regularly to see my mother, Kateree. But this will be the first time in a long time that I'll visit Broncos camp ? professionally. Come to think of it, John (Elway) is the only guy left (with the team) who I really know professionally. Time really does fly."

Davis' NFL season won't end with preseason coverage.

He will be a major part of "NFL AM," the network's live weekday morning show, starting in September. He will be a key contributor to the important Monday program, which will recap all Sunday NFL action.

"The show will be live at 6 a.m on the East Coast," Davis said. "I'll be working in the Los Angeles studio, which means I'll go on air at 3 a.m. Now that's a bit of a challenge.

"In

fact, this television broadcasting is a challenge.

"I don't look at it as an award for having a strong pro football career. I'm learning as I go along, just as I did on the football field.

"I'm working with and watching TV professionals. One of my mentors is Solomon Wilcots (of CBS Sports). I like the way he analyzes teams and reports on what's happening on the field," Davis said.

Broncos fans in particular are aware of Davis' spectacular career, highlighted by a Super Bowl MVP performance Jan. 25, 1998, when Denver beat the Green Bay Packers.

But ingrained in Davis' Broncos memory bank is the team's second preseason game in 1995, played against the San Francisco 49ers.

As a rookie sixth-round draft choice, Davis was almost forgotten on the Denver roster.

"I hadn't played during the first three quarters of that game," he recalled. "I was getting antsy.

"Running backs coach Bobby Turner put me on special teams during a kickoff situation in the fourth quarter. I made a jarring tackle. When we got the ball back, Turner let me play as a runner. That's how it all started."

By the time the regular season started, Davis was Denver's No. 1 running back. He eventually became the Broncos' all-time leading rusher with 7,607 yards. He rushed for 2,008 yards in the 1998 season.

While induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame has eluded him, Davis' Southern California home in Temecula is filled with a variety of plaques and honors.

Tamiko, his wife, appreciates them.

But two sons, Jaxon, 2, and Niles, 4 months, obviously aren't particularly interested in their dad's football accomplishments.

Only one distinctive award has been given away.

At the end of his career, Davis was honored with a Blue Baby Beanie Doll named Terrell.

"My nieces and nephews cherish it," Davis said.

"The Press Box" makes move to TV

In baseball, a triple play is considered unusual.

In sports coverage, a quadruple play is unique.

"The Press Box," a weeknight 10 p.m. half-hour show on KCDO-TV (K3), is a graphic example of how local sports coverage can move into the multimedia digital age, utilizing TV, radio, newspaper and online resources.

The program, produced and taped in studios at The Denver Post, is similar in format to the sports talk show featuring Mark Kiszla and Peter Burns that airs weekdays 7-9 a.m. on Mile High Sports radio (1510 AM and 93.7 FM). Also featured on the TV show is Oren Lomena, a local sports media personality.

"The Press Box" has a logical connection with The Denver Post, because the programs can be viewed on the paper's website.

The often-controversial Kiszla has been lobbying for many years for The Post to move into the digital age.

Key executives in the project are Tim Rasmussen, The Post's assistant managing editor for photography and multimedia, and Greg Armstrong, a veteran TV executive now running K3.

Both say "The Press Box" project is the first of its kind in the country.

"Certain senior executives of GSK China who know our systems well, appear to have acted outside of our processes and controls which breaches Chinese law," said Abbas Hussain, GSK President International Europe, Japan, Emerging Markets Asia Pacific in a statement Monday.

Hussain flew to China last week to deal with the crisis which has seen four of GSK's executives questioned and Steve Nechelput, the finance director of the GSK China unit, banned from leaving the country.

GSK acknowledged on Thursday that Nechelput has been subject to a travel ban since the end of June..

Hussain said he had had a very constructive meeting with the Chinese Ministry of Public Security to discuss their investigation into GSK:

"We have had a very constructive meeting with the Ministry of Public Security, and we are very grateful for their time. GSK is taking this situation extremely seriously and that is why we are here.

"Certain senior executives of GSK China who know our systems well, appear to have acted outside of our processes and controls which breaches Chinese law. We have zero tolerance for any behaviour of this nature."

The acknowledgement comes as GSK says it is co-operating with a Chinese investigation into alleged bribing of doctors to prescribe the firm's drugs.

In a remedial step, the pharmaceutical company said it would cut medicine prices for Chinese patients.

Chinese investigations have so far revealed that GSK executives had paid money to doctors and health officials to boost sales and raise prices of the drugs. The funds were fictitiously routed through a travel agency handling exotic holidays..

"I want to make it very clear that we share the desire of the Chinese authorities to root out corruption wherever it exists. We will continue to work together with the MPS and we will take all necessary actions required as this investigation progresses," said Hussain in a statement.

"We fully support the efforts of the Chinese authorities in their reforms of the medical sector and stand ready to work with them to make the changes for the benefit of patients in China. We will actively look at our business model to ensure we make a significant contribution to meeting the economic, healthcare and environmental needs of China and its citizens.."

The British company stated that the savings generated due to the proposed changes in GSK's operational model will be passed to the consumers through price reductions, "ensuring our medicines are more affordable to Chinese patients."

Hussain said the company would be working with the Chinese authorities to root out corruption wherever it exists

Last week, police in China said GSK had transferred 3billion yuan ($489million) to travel agencies and consultancies to facilitate bribes to doctors.

Chinese authorities have taken into custody four Chinese executives at GSK in connection with the allegations.

They have accused GSK of using travel agencies to bribe government officials, doctors and hospitals in order to boost sales and prices of their drugs. The investigation began at the end of June, police said.

One of the four executives, vice-president and operations manager Liang Hong admitted on state television (on 16 July) that he had funneled money through travel agencies for arranged conferences, some of which were never held.

GSK's general manager for China, Mark Reilly, is said to have left the country for Britain last month.

The Chinese authorities have said that similar transfers were made by other pharmaceutical multinationals, but without naming any.

Meanwhile, rival AstraZeneca said one of its staff was also being questioned.

In a statement, AstraZeneca said in a statement that it "can confirm that it was visited by the Shanghai Public Security Bureau - Huangpu Branch regarding a local police matter focused on a sales representative.

"We believe that this investigation relates to an individual case and while we have not yet received and update from the Public Security Bureau, we have no reason to believe it's related to any other investigations."

A British Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware of the detention of a British national in Shanghai. We are providing consular assistance to the family."

Baghdad car bombs, other Iraq attacks kill 46

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A coordinated wave of seven car bombs tore through bustling commercial streets Saturday night in Shiite areas of Baghdad, part of a relentless wave of violence that killed at least 46 inside and outside the capital.

The car bombs detonated after the iftar meal that breaks the daily fast of the holy month of Ramadan. Many people head out to shop or relax in coffee shops in the cooler evenings after fasting ends.

Bombings and other attacks have now killed more than 250 people since the start of Ramadan on July 10, according to an Associated Press count. The violence is a continuation of a surge of bloodshed that has rocked Iraq for months, reviving fears of a return to the widespread sectarian killings that pushed the country to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, coordinated bombings against Shiites are a favorite tactic of al-Qaida's Iraq branch.

Saturday's blasts began with an explosion in a busy shopping street that shook buildings in the central Baghdad neighborhood of Karrada. Police say that attack killed nine and wounded 17, and left several shops and food stalls damaged.

"The evening is the busiest time of day when a lot of people pour into Karrada after iftar to shop or eat in restaurants," said clothes vendor Karim Sami, who was working just down the road from the site of the blast.

"We don't know who to blame for these security breaches, but we are sure of one thing: Our people are bleeding every day," he said.

Similar car bombs struck the northwestern Tobchi district, killing eight and wounding 29, and Baiyaa in western Baghdad, killing three and wounding 13, authorities said.

Another blast struck Zafaraniyah in southeastern Baghdad, killing six and wounding 15, officials said.

Two separate car bombs exploded in the New Baghdad neighborhood in the southeast, killing five people and wounding 17, authorities said.

Yet another car bomb exploded in a Shiite part of the religiously mixed western neighborhood of Shurta, killing four and wounding 12, authorities said.

A senior Iraqi intelligence official, who is not allowed to speak publically to journalists, said the coordinated nature of the car bombings strongly indicates al-Qaida is responsible.

Hours before the Baghdad blasts, gunmen in pickup trucks shot and killed the local leader of a local Sunni militia opposed to al-Qaida and two of his bodyguards near the city of Baqouba, 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of the Iraqi capital, according to police. Baqouba is the provincial capital of Diyala, which was once the site of some of the fiercest fighting between U.S. forces and insurgents in Iraq.

The official, Bassem Mahmoud, headed a Sunni group known as Sahwa, which joined the fight against al-Qaida during the height of Iraq war. He was killed a day after a deadly bombing at a Sunni mosque in Diyala killed 22 people and wounded dozens.

Like the capital Baghdad, Diyala is religiously mixed and witnessed some of the worst atrocities as Shiite militias battled Sunni insurgents for control in the years after the invasion.

Another Sahwa member was killed along with four others when a bomb went off late Saturday near his house in Madain, about 20 kilometers (14 miles) southeast of Baghdad, officials said. Four people were wounded in that attack.

In the restive northern city of Mosul, authorities said a suicide bomber blew himself up near a military post, killing one woman and wounding 25 people, many of them soldiers.

Gunmen near the city also kidnapped three off-duty policemen and their driver, killing two of the men and seriously wounding the other two, authorities said. Mosul is 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad.

Police provided details of all of the attacks, while hospital officials confirmed the death tolls. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to media.

Egypt forms committee to amend constitution

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's interim president selected a team of legal experts Saturday to rewrite controversial portions of the Islamist-drafted constitution, as the military-backed leadership moved quickly to try to capitalize on the coup that ousted the country's first freely elected leader.

While supporters of former President Mohammed Morsi still protest in the streets, Egypt's new prime minister called for consensus and participation of all political groups. But Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood group officially has refused to negotiate with the new government, saying they are open for talks only after he is reinstated.

The persistent protest and clashes, however, continue to rock hope for stability in the country.

Moves to amend the constitution are the latest push by the country's new leadership to move ahead with a military-backed timetable for a return to democratic rule to Egypt. The drafting of Egypt's constitution was one of the most divisive issues that came to characterize Morsi's first and only year in office.

In his decree Saturday, interim President Adly Mansour appointed the 10-member committee of judges and law professors that will propose amendments to the constitution. They have 30 days to suggest amendments. A second committee, comprised of 50 public figures including politicians, unionists and religious figures, then will have 60 days to review those amendments.

After that, citizens will vote on the proposed amendments in a referendum, according to the military-backed timetable. Parliamentary elections are to follow.

In an interview with Egyptian state television aired Saturday night, Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi said it is vital that Islamists take part in the political process, though none of Morsi's supporters are in the new Cabinet he leads.

"We cannot write a constitution when the country is divided. The country needs consensus," he said. "It is important we return to a country of laws."

The Brotherhood say the only legitimate constitution is the one approved in a nationwide vote and ratified by Morsi in December. The military suspended the constitution after the July 3 coup.

El-Beblawi also denied that the country's army chief, Abdel-Fatah el-Sissi, was pulling the strings from behind the scenes, saying he only spoke to the interim president regarding the formation of Cabinet.

Liberals twice walked out of committees drafting the constitution under Morsi, complaining that the Brotherhood and its allies dominated the process and stifled their suggestions.

Protests over the constitution and the direction of the country turned deadly after Morsi issued temporary decrees in late November that put himself and the drafting committee above judicial oversight. The charter was then finalized in a rushed overnight session and passed in a referendum.

Unlike the previous drafting committee under Morsi, at least 20 percent of the second committee is to be represented by young Egyptians who helped galvanize street movements and women.

Mohammed Abdel-Aziz, a leading figure in the Tamarod petition drive that mobilized the massive street protests that led to Morsi's ouster, said his group has launched a new initiative to collect suggestions from Egyptians on the constitution.

"We want to reach a constitution that is representative of the people's will," Abdel-Aziz told The Associated Press. He declined to comment on which articles the group wants amended.

Meanwhile Saturday, a security official said unidentified assailants threw a bomb at a police station in the governorate of Ismailiya, between Cairo and the volatile northern region of the Sinai Peninsula. Part of the building and a police vehicle were damaged, but no injuries were reported, the official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to journalists.

Clashes between protesters and security forces have erupted into violence several times since Morsi's ouster, killing more than 60 people. The most recent incident occurred Friday night in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura when unidentified assailants opened fire at a Brotherhood-led march, sparking a melee that killed three female protesters, authorities said.

The Brotherhood said two were killed by gunshot and one died after suffocating on tear gas. Medical officials said the protesters' bodies were examined Saturday.

The prime minister and Vice President Mohammed ElBaradei condemned the incident in separate posts on Twitter.

The Brotherhood said the killings "shed light on the bloody nature of dictatorship and the police state under a military coup."

Authorities are clamping down on the group, with eight top Islamist figures are under arrest. Prosecutors issued another arrest warrant Saturday for the Brotherhood's top figure, Mohammed Badie, and four others. The latest warrants accused them of inciting violence with police that led to the deaths of seven pro-Morsi supporters in Cairo this week.

Morsi has been held incommunicado at an undisclosed military facility since his ouster. He has not been charged with any crime.

The Brotherhood's television channel and others sympathetic to the group have been taken off the air. On Saturday, security officials said that police raided the Iranian Alalam TV station and arrested its manager. Authorities said the station did not have the proper permits to operate in Egypt. An employee at the station told BBC Arabic that they had applied for permits, but, as has happened with other stations in the past, authorities delayed issuing them licenses to operate.

Rights groups have criticized the clampdown and Morsi's detention, as well as the deaths of dozens of protesters in recent weeks.

In another sign of the interim government's drive to move on with the transition, Jordan's King Abdullah met with the country's president, army chief and other top figures Saturday in the first visit by a head of state to Cairo since the coup. The king's visit highlighted his support of the coup that ousted the Brotherhood from power.

Additionally, Egypt's new foreign minister Nabil Fahmy said Egypt continues to support the Syrian uprising but has no intention of supporting a jihad ? or holy war ? in the nation. Fahmy said that "everything will be re-evaluated" regarding the country's stance toward Syria. Morsi had severed diplomatic ties with Damascus just weeks before his ouster.

Fahmy also said Cairo is also "seriously assessing" its relations with the Syrian regime's key regional backer Iran. Morsi moved to improve diplomatic ties with Tehran.

Coming to Phones4u, O2, Vodafone and EE; first SIM-free prices? starting to appear

Yesterday saw the official unveiling of the HTC One Mini — the manufacturer's miniaturized, lower-priced version of its current flagship. And we've published a full hands-on preview, walking through the device's features and comparing it to the full-sized One, as well as Samsung's rival Galaxy S4 Mini.

Over the past day we've started to see the first signs of when and where UK buyers will be able to pick up the device. Network operators O2 and Vodafone have confirmed on Twitter that they'll be offering the One Mini for sale — O2 says it's "coming soon," while Voda promises an August launch. Meanwhile an EE spokesperson confirmed to Android Central that it'll be offering the HTC One Mini on its 4G network, but didn't offer any pricing or release date.

On the SIM-free side, Handtec is the first British retailer to post a pre-order price for the device — £379.99 inc. VAT, or £316.66 exc. VAT. Pre-order prices can be subject to change, but Handtec's price falls roughly in line with with the official line from HTC, that the Mini will sell at "two price points below" the full-sized One.

HTC's press release says the Mini will hit "selected markets" from August, and we're hearing on the grapevine that for the UK, early August is more likely than late. Elsewhere, a global roll-out is scheduled for September. Finally, there's been no official announcement on U.S. availability for the One Mini just yet, despite rumors that it's bound for AT&T.

Allergic disease worsens respiratory symptoms and exacerbations in COPD

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who also have allergic disease have higher levels of respiratory symptoms and are at higher risk for COPD exacerbations, according to a new study from researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

"Although allergic sensitization and allergen exposure are known to be associated with impairments in lung function, the effects of allergic disease on respiratory symptoms in COPD patients has only recently been studied," said researcher Nadia N. Hansel, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins Asthma & Allergy Center. "Accordingly, we examined the effects of allergic disease on respiratory health in two sets of patients with COPD, one a nationally representative sample of 1,381 COPD patients from the National Health and Nutrition Survey III (NHANES III) and the other a cohort of 77 former smokers with COPD from a study of the effects of endotoxin exposure on health status."

"We found that COPD patients with an allergic phenotype had an increased risk of lower respiratory symptoms and respiratory exacerbations."

The findings were published online ahead of print publication in the American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

In the NHANES III cohort, 296 COPD patients had an allergic phenotype, which was defined as self-reported doctor-diagnosed hay fever or allergic upper respiratory symptoms. These patients were significantly more likely to wheeze, have chronic cough, and have chronic phlegm and had a significantly increased risk of experiencing a COPD exacerbation that required an acute visit to the doctor.

In the second cohort of 77 COPD patients, the 23 patients with allergic sensitization (determined by immunoglobulin E testing) were significantly more likely to wheeze, to experience nighttime awakening due to cough, and to have COPD exacerbations requiring antibiotic treatment or an acute visit to the doctor.

"Our findings in two independent populations that allergic disease is associated with greater severity of COPD suggest that treatment of active allergic disease or avoidance of allergy triggers may help improve respiratory symptoms in these patients, although causality could not be determined in our cross-sectional study," said Dr. Hansel.

There were a few limitations to the study, including possible misclassification of COPD in some NHANES patients and the use of self-reported respiratory symptoms and COPD exacerbations.

"Current COPD guidelines do not address the management of allergic disease in COPD patients," Dr, Hansel said. "Additional studies of the relationship between allergic disease and COPD are clearly needed."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A dancer and choreographer who worked with Michael Jackson throughout his career testified on Wednesday that she told the director of Jackson's ill-fated concert tour that she was worried about the singer's health, but her plea went unanswered.

Witness Alif Sankey told a jury deciding a lawsuit that the pop star appeared thin and unprepared in 2009 for the rigors of his planned comeback concerts known as "This Is It."

The singer showed up at one rehearsal with shoes that had holes in the soles, missed rehearsals and appeared much thinner than earlier in his career, Sankey testified.

Sankey showed jurors an email she wrote to tour director Kenny Ortega in early June 2009, urging him to try to improve Jackson's health and spirits. She said she never got a reply.

"Please help me help you to get him back into that Magical Light, please let me help you help him find what was lost, his GRAIL," Sankey wrote to Ortega, who she had worked closely with for a number of years.

She wrote that she knew what she could say to Jackson that would make him respond and also offered suggestions to help lessen the pain of rehearsals.

Sankey met Jackson while working on his 1987 video for "Smooth Criminal" and was an associate producer and planned to dance onstage during "This Is It."

She was testifying at the trial of a negligent hiring lawsuit filed by Jackson's mother against concert promoter AEG Live LLC. Katherine Jackson claims AEG failed to properly investigate the doctor who was caring for her son and later administered a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol to the singer in June 2009.

The promoter has denied wrongdoing and its attorneys have said the singer hid his addiction to propofol. Jackson's former physician, Conrad Murray, was convicted in 2011 of involuntary manslaughter. He is appealing the case.

Sankey said she based some of her impressions of Jackson over the years on how he felt when they hugged.

"When I hugged him, he just felt like marble," Sankey said about Jackson early in his career. "But when I hugged, when I saw him briefly in 2006, he didn't feel like that anymore. He felt thin. He just felt thin."

He was thin during the "This Is It" preparations, she said, and she became concerned when he missed multiple rehearsals.

The dancer also described meeting Jackson's daughter, Paris, while footage was being shot for the "This Is It" shows. Paris Jackson shared a secret with Sankey, saying she had brought lots of candy stuffed into her purse to the studio and didn't want her father to find out.

There were also several tiny pictures inside her purse ? all of her father.

"Her purse was full of candy and pictures of her daddy," Sankey said.

Philadelphia gets ready to play Pong on a building

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Philadelphia is getting ready for a supersized game of Pong.

The classic Atari video game will come to life on the facade of a 29-story skyscraper. Hundreds of built-in LED lights at the Cira (SEAR'-ah) Centre will replicate the familiar paddles and ball.

The effort is the brainchild of Frank Lee, a Drexel University game-design professor.

Pong will be played April 19 and 24, to bookend an event called Philly Tech Week.

The black-and-white arcade game introduced in 1972 had no complicated graphics, just geometric shapes. Players controlled digital paddles and tried to hit the ball so their opponents could not return it. A home version paved the way for the game console industry.

In Philadelphia, gamers will control their paddles from afar, standing across the Schuylkill (SKOO'-kul) River from the building.

As much as we love Google Drive, its neither the prettiest nor simplest cloud storage interface. New UI tweaks rolling out to users starting today aren't suddenly going to change that hierarchy too much, but they should add some much needed polish. When you view shared folders now, you'll get a much more visually appealing layout and access to the new preview function that lets you quickly flip between files. And, perhaps the most welcome change, is the new "Add to Dive" button that will conspicuously live in the upper right-hand corner. Now adding shared material to your own Drive account is just a single click away. Normally, this is where we'd say hit up the source for more details, but that's really it. Enjoy!

NEW YORK (AP) ? Elton John and his longtime songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, will be honored at this year's Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

John and Taupin, who teamed on most of the singer's best-known hits, will receive the Johnny Mercer Award during the June 13 ceremony in New York.

A Tuesday news release says the award goes to previous inductees ? John and Taupin were inducted in 1992 ? whose body of work upholds the standards set by Mercer, a co-founder of Capitol Records.

John and Taupin have teamed on some of rock 'n' roll's most well-known songs, including "Rocket Man," ''Crocodile Rock," ''Daniel" and "Candle in the Wind."

This year's inductees are Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Holly Knight, JD Souther and Tony Hatch.

NASA sends unmanned aircraft to study volcanic plume

Apr. 2, 2013 ? Studying volcanos can be hazardous work, both for researchers and aircraft. To penetrate such dangerous airspace, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), especially those with electric engines that ingest little contaminated air, are an emerging and effective way to gather crucial data about volcanic ash and gases.

Last month, a team of NASA researchers deployed three repurposed military UAVs with special instruments into and above the noxious sulfur dioxide plume of Costa Rica's active Turrialba volcano, near San Jose. The project was designed to improve the remote-sensing capability of satellites, including satellite data research products such as maps of the concentration and distribution of volcanic gases. It was also designed to improve computer models of how and where volcanic plumes will travel.

Led by principal investigator David Pieri of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., the team launched 10 flights of the remote controlled UAVs into the volcanic plume and above the rim of Turrialba's 10,500-foot (3,200-meter) summit crater between March 11 and 14.

The small, twin electric engine Dragon Eye UAVs were acquired by researchers at NASA's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., from the United States Marine Corps. Weighing less than six pounds (2.2 kilograms) each and with a wingspan of 3.75 feet (1.1 meters), they have visible and infrared video cameras and can carry a one-pound instrument payload for up to an hour within a volcanic plume. The researchers equipped them with sulfur dioxide and particle sensors and automatic atmospheric sampling bottles keyed to measure sulfur dioxide concentration.

During the flights, the team coordinated its data gathering with NASA's Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument on NASA's Terra spacecraft, allowing scientists to compare sulfur dioxide concentration measurements from the satellite with measurements taken from within the plume.

Scientists believe computer models derived from this study will contribute to safeguarding the National and International Airspace System, and will also improve global climate predictions and mitigate environmental hazards (e.g., sulfur dioxide volcanic smog, or "vog") for people who live near volcanoes.

A key constituent of such models is the intensity and character of the volcanic activity located near the eruption vent. For instance, knowing the height of ash and gas concentrations, and temperatures over the vent during an eruption are important initial factors for any model that predicts the direction of the volcanic plume.

"It is very difficult to gather data from within volcanic eruption columns and plumes because updraft wind speeds are very high and high ash concentrations can quickly destroy aircraft engines," said Pieri. "Such flight environments can be very dangerous to manned aircraft. Volcanic eruption plumes may stretch for miles from a summit vent, and detached ash clouds can drift hundreds to thousands of miles from an eruption site."

The project supports NASA's ASTER mission as well as JPL's planned Hyperspectral Infrared Imager (HyspIRI) satellite mission by improving satellite data-based retrievals of gases and solid aerosols associated with volcanic activity, as well as volcanic emission transport models. HyspIRI will study the world's ecosystems and provide critical information on natural disasters such as volcanoes, assessing their pre-eruptive behavior and the likelihood of future eruptions.
