Temporary post ? will be replaced
Today is my birthday so we were hoping to make it a special day.
While we were having breakfast at Pret in St John Street, a pigeon came in and found itself imprisoned behind the big plate glass windows. I went to the window, picked up the pigeon and released it outside. For me this was a birthday present in itself as I like handling pigeons ? and any birds ? but don?t get the opportunity every day. It was a pretty pigeon, brown and white and seemingly in good health.
We then caught a bus to Waterloo station and there took a train to Strawberry Hill. It was our intention to visit Horace Walpole?s house, Strawberry Hill House. During the journey, Tigger discovered that the house is open to the public every day except Friday! Nonetheless, we decided to continue and view (and photograph) the house from outside, and then to have a look at another house in the area, perhaps Orleans House Gallery.
We were able to access the grounds of Strawberry Hill House and photograph the massive building from outside. Afterwards we went down to the river where there was a small park, called Radnor Gardens, with beautiful views of the Thames.

We went into Richmond and had lunch at All Bar One and then took a bus to Marble Hill, not to see Marble Hill House, which we knew was closed, but to visit Orleans House Gallery which is nearby and which we had tried, unsuccessfully, to visit on Saturday.
The big octagonal room was closed so we will go back another day to see that. We contented ourselves with the exhibition Polemically Small, described by the gallery as ?based on the idea that small works of art are often more powerful in their effect than big ones?. Photography of individual works was not allowed but we were permitted to take general views of the galleries.
We walked back to the main road and looked for a bus stop. The weather was extremely hot and neither of us could remember such a hot September. We were quite content to take a bus to the station and start our journey home. I had had an enjoyable day out for my birthday. We visited two fine old houses but without exhausting the treasures they offer. They remain on the list to be visited and enjoyed again.
