Stars ancient and modern?

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

This colourful view of the globular star cluster NGC 6362 was captured by the Wide Field Imager attached to the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile. This new picture, along with a new image of the central region from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, provide the best view of this little-known cluster ever obtained. Globular clusters are mainly composed of tens of thousands of very ancient stars, but they also contain some stars that look suspiciously young.

Globular star clusters are among the oldest objects in the Universe, and NGC 6362 cannot hide its age in this picture. The many yellowish stars in the cluster have already run through much of their lives and become red giant stars. But globular clusters are not static relics from the past -- some curious stellar activities are still going on in these dense star cities.

For instance, NGC 6362 is home to many blue stragglers -- old stars that really do succeed in passing for a younger age. All of the stars in a globular cluster formed from the same material at roughly the same time (typically, about 10 billion years ago for most globulars). Yet blue stragglers are bluer and more luminous -- and hence more massive -- than they should be after ten billion years of stellar evolution. Blue stars are hot and consume their fuel quickly, so if these stars had formed about ten billion years ago, then they should have fizzled out long ago. How did they survive?

Astronomers are keen to understand the secret of the youthful appearance of blue stragglers. Currently, there are two main theories: stars colliding and merging, and a transfer of material between two companion stars. The basic idea behind both of these options is that the stars were not born as big as we see them today, but that they received an injection of extra material at some point during their lifetimes and this then gave them a new lease of life.

Although less well known than some brighter globular clusters, NGC 6362 holds much that is of interest to astronomers and has been well studied over the years. It was selected as one of the 160 stellar fields for the Pre-FLAMES Survey -- a preliminary survey conducted between 1999 and 2002 using the 2.2-metre telescope at La Silla to find suitable stars for follow-up observations with the VLT's spectroscopic instrument FLAMES. The picture here comes from data collected as part of this survey.

The new image shows the entire cluster against a rich background of the carpet of stars in the Milky Way. The central parts of NGC 6362 have also been [studied in detail][1] by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The Hubble view shows a much smaller area of sky in much greater detail. The two views -- one wide-angle and one zoomed in -- complement each other perfectly.

This brilliant ball of stars lies in the southern constellation of Ara (The Altar). It can be easily seen in a small telescope. It was first spotted in 1826 by the Scottish astronomer James Dunlop using a 22-centimetre telescope in Australia.

Stock index futures edge lower; cash indexes shut

LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures traded a touch lower on Tuesday, with cash equity indexes set to remain closed for a second day due to a severe storm hitting the East Coast.

Futures for the S&P 500 fell 0.2 percent, Dow Jones futures shed 0.1 percent and contracts on the Nasdaq 100 were down 0.4 percent at 0940 GMT.

Sandy, one of the biggest storms ever to hit the United States, battered the nation's eastern seaboard on Tuesday, swamping New York City streets with record levels of floodwater, blacking out power to millions of people and bringing transport to a halt through much of the region.

NYSE Euronext said it plans to test a new contingency plan to help resume trading as Wall Street turns its attention to whether markets can resume functioning on Wednesday. That is a key session because it marks the end of the month, when traders price portfolios.

The storm also prompted dozens of companies, including Pfizer , McGraw-Hill , Thomson Reuters , Ralph Lauren and Time Warner , to delay their quarterly results.

Ford is expected to report third-quarter earnings per share of $0.30, down from $0.46 last year, and analysts will focus on the automaker's operations in Europe, where the company will be cutting costs, according to recent interviews with the management.

Video-games makers Electronic Arts and Take-Two Interactive Software also post quarterly results. EA's holiday release Medal Of Honor has not yet generated the buzz the company had expected and this could push the company to lower its 2013 guidance, analysts say.

Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook on Monday pushed out the powerful head of the company's mobile software products group, sources said, in a major management shake-up that also claimed the recently hired chief of the retail stores division.

European stocks rose on Tuesday, led by Swiss bank UBS after it confirmed cost-cutting plans and UK energy firm BP after it raised its dividend.

Japan's Nikkei <.n225> average fell 1 percent to a two-week closing low on Tuesday after the Bank of Japan eased monetary policy by increasing the size of its asset-buying and lending programme by $138 billion, largely as expected.

S&P 500 futures fell 4.9 points on Monday and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 69 points and Nasdaq 100 futures NDc1 fell 15.75 points.

&#39;Hurricane Sandy&#39;s Worst Online Troll&#39; - Business Insider

An influential netizen came under angry scrutiny Tuesday after dramatic information he announced on his widely-followed Twitter account at the peak of deadly superstorm Sandy was found to be false.

Some of his claims -- which included a report the New York Stock Exchange trading platform was seriously flooded -- went viral as Sandy battered the US east coast late Monday, forcing authorities to issue rapid-fire denials.

@ComfortablySmug's tweets were just some of the rumors and false information that circulated widely on Twitter during the storm -- all of which had been discounted by fact-checkers or authorities by Tuesday.

"There are a lot of bad people out there, but it takes a special chutzpah to tweet false information during a disaster. cc @comfortablysmug," @byelin said on Twitter, one of many angry netizens.

Another netizen called @ComfortablySmug -- who counts the digital director of Barack Obama's campaign as one of his 6,164 followers -- "Hurricane Sandy's worst online troll."

The netizen's claim about the NYSE trading floor being under three feet of water was soon refuted by the stock exchange, but it was still retweeted 642 times. The rumor also found its way onto national television.

Another "breaking" tweet that Con Edison was shutting down all power in New York City earned him an almost immediate rebuke on Twitter from the electricity firm, which said his information was "wrong."

Aside from @ComfortablySmug, other pieces of misinformation also spread like widlfire on Twitter, from reports that people were stuck in a building to pictures of a shark swimming in floodwaters.

One man called Tom Phillips posted some of these photos on a page on blogging platform Tumblr -- titled "Is Twitter Wrong?" -- and fact-checked them.

One dramatic picture of a threatening cloud mass over New York that was retweeted thousands of times, for instance, was found to be more than a year old.

Amy Mitchell, deputy director of the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, said the spread of false information was one of the consequences of the advent of the Internet and its thirst for instant news.

"Even when the piece of information has been corrected, there is a good chance it's got to individuals that won't ever see the correction," she said.

"There's more of an onus placed on the news consumer to be able to check for themselves, knowing which sources are those they can trust."

>> reporter: good evening, brian, it certainly is, and over the next couple of hours, rhode island is bracing for the worst part of the storm, the worst rain, wind and flooding. we have been watching the flooding all day, up close to the sea wall in narragansett , starting to breach the high tide , and the waters just kept coming in. the police kept saying it was the worst flooding they have ever seen, and that was hours ago. high tide is expected again at 8:00. and that is the time where the governor says they could expect life-threatening flood levels. and all over massachusetts, the police were concerned people wouldn't take this storm seriously enough. and they made sure they warned people about about it. but a lot of people looking at the storm maps seeing the center cross over new jersey thought they would be okay. they realize now what a mistake that was. 80,000 people in the state are without electricity, there are rescue crews on the roads trying to clear trees from the roads. and we were in some coastal communities today that are completely under water. and as i said, the worst is yet to come.

(AP) ? Greece's two main labor unions covering civil servants and the private sector have called a 48-hour strike to protest austerity measures due to be voted on next week.

The unions said Wednesday that the strike on Nov. 6-7 will be accompanied by demonstrations in central Athens on both days. Previous such protests have turned violent.

The strike call came as the finance minister submitted an amended 2013 budget that raised the country's debt and deficit forecasts for next year.

It also came as lawmakers approved a privatization bill in a fractious vote that saw dissent from members of the two junior partners in the three-party governing coalition.

How to recover data from a dead or erased hard drive

19 hrs.

Q. I?have a hard drive with valuable information on it, but I can't seem to access it???the drive is either damaged or erased. Is there any way I can see what's on the drive and get it off??

Don't worry, we're not going to ask where you got the drive, but there are plenty of ways to examine it and see if any of the data is recoverable. With a little time, the right tools, and some care, you may be able to get some data off of that drive.

Step one: Assemble your tools and examine the drive's condition
The first thing to do is make sure you have the tools required to connect this drive to another computer safely. Ideally, you'll have some kind of SATA/IDE to USB cable or USB drive enclosure or sled that you can mount the drive into and connect it to your computer easily. Sure, if you have a desktop and like getting your hands dirty you can try to install the drive as an internal one, but an external connection is faster and easier.

Next, take a look at the drive itself. Is it damaged in any way? Are the pins bent or broken? Make sure that the drive is in good enough condition to actually use before you try anything in the first place that may damage it even further. If the drive is too physically damaged to attempt recovery, you may need more drastic measures that we'll get to later. If everything looks good and you have the equipment required to connect the drive to your system, we can proceed.

Step two: Grab some data recovery software and connect the drive
Before you do much else, make sure your antivirus and antimalware tools are up to date. You don't know what you'll find on this drive, and you don't want it to start misbehaving once the drive is connected to an active system. Once you've done that, it's time to download and install some data recovery tools. Here are a few we love:

Recuva (Windows, Free): Personally, Recuva has been indispensible. Made by the same folks behind CCleaner, Recuva makes data recovery simple and easy. if you're only interested in browsing and restoring selected files off of the drive, Recuva is a great option. Alternatively, check out Undelete Plus for Windows.

FileSalvage (OS X, $80): File Salvage for Mac will set you back some serious coin, but it's one of the best tools to pull data off of a connected hard drive in OS X. It can recover virtually any type of file on multiple partition types, and prides itself on its ability to recover from damaged drives and corrupt media. If you want an alternative, try Data Rescue for Mac ($100).

TestDisk (Win/OS X/Linux, Free): If you're not afraid of the command line, TestDisk is an open source utility that can run against almost any platform or partition type. It does a great job of recovering data quickly, and won't do unnecessary writes against the drive you're trying to recover from.

Bootable Linux distros for drive recovery: If you're not interested in messing around with apps (or paying for them), consider burning a bootable CD or USB key with BackTrack, Bart PE, or SpinRite on it, so you can boot to an OS that's not your primary drive, avoid writing or touching the drive you want to recover from, and run a host of recovery and forensics tools against that drive that are highly effective and completely free.?

A number of these tools can recover from formatted drives, especially if the data hasn't been overwritten. We've tackled this topic before, and used Knoppix as our bootable linux distro, but the steps apply to the ones we've mentioned as well. For more reading, check out this old but still largely accurate guide at Linux.com to recovering from formatted drives.

Remember, the less you work with the drive you want to recover data from, the better. As you read from the drive, you run the risk of exacerbating any damage it may have. The more you write to the drive, the more likely you are to overwrite something you want to recover. Bootable Linux distros??many of which have tools like TestDisk pre-installed (among other, more advanced tools)???are the best way to go if you're familiar with the method and if you're interested in recovering entire partitions, or making a non-bootable drive bootable again. If you're just looking for files and you know the drive was in a Windows system or a Mac, a stand-alone app is an easier way to go.

Step three: Get out the big guns (and your wallet)
Okay, so the drive is physically damaged, has been wiped and overwritten, or nothing else you try works and you really, really need the data off of it. You're even willing to pay a lot?for it. We're not going to ask why, but at this point it's time to call in the professionals.?

Pick up the phone and call the folks at DriveSavers and OnTrack to see what they can do for you. I've had good experiences with OnTrack. DriveSavers is well known and loved, both because they came to the rescue with free drive recovery services after September 11, 2001 and more recently helping Wired's Mat Honan recover from his epic hacking. Both companies do a superb job at pulling data even off of drives that have been formatted, overwritten, or even severely physically damaged. Keep in mind though that these services generally run in the thousand dollar-range, according to DriveSavers,?and higher.

If the drive is yours, or the data you get from the drive is valuable, we'd strongly suggest you make sure your data is backed up, both locally and online. After all, it's better to be able to get the data back quickly than have to jump through these hoops every time a drive fails. Remember, every hard drive will fail eventually, it's just a matter of time. Now go forth, use this knowledge for good, and recover!?

BBC scandal raises questions for incoming NYT boss

LONDON (AP) ? The child abuse scandal that has enveloped one of Britain's most respected news organizations is now hitting one of America's, as the incoming president of The New York Times is on the defensive about his final days as head of the BBC.

Mark Thompson was in charge of the BBC in late 2011 when the broadcaster shelved what would have been a bombshell investigation alleging that the late Jimmy Savile, one of its biggest stars, was a serial sex offender.

The BBC scandal has horrified Britain with revelations that Savile, a popular children's television presenter, cajoled and coerced vulnerable teens into having sex with him in his car, in his camper van, and even in dingy dressing rooms on BBC premises.

Police say there could be more than 200 victims, leading one child protection charity to state that Savile could rank among Britain's most prolific child sex predators.

In a sign of how the scandal may spread, the BBC said Tuesday it was looking into claims of sexual abuse and harassment against nine other current and former employees and contributors.

As increasing numbers of BBC executives come under the microscope over what they knew about Savile ? and why the posthumous expose about his sexual crimes was blocked ? Thompson is being quizzed about his role as well.

In a letter to Conservative lawmaker Rob Wilson, Thompson laid out his defense, saying he never worked with Savile, never worked on any of the entertainer's programs and indeed never met the man. Referring to the increasing number of BBC employees who have come forward to say that Savile's interest in young girls was widely rumored, Thompson said he had never been aware of the whispers.

"If I had, I would have raised them with senior colleagues and contacted the police," said Thompson, 55.

The controversy was compounded when it emerged that an investigation into Savile by the BBC's "Newsnight" program was shelved last year only weeks before the BBC aired a glowing holiday tribute show to Savile.

Now journalists and lawmakers are asking whether BBC bosses canned the show to protect their star, a prodigious charity fundraiser who was widely eulogized following his death last year at age 84.

The corporation denies a cover-up, although "Newsnight" editor Peter Rippon recently stepped down as the BBC's internal investigation got under way. After weeks of standing by Rippon, the BBC has said his explanation about why the Savile show was not broadcast was incomplete and inaccurate.

With Thompson about to move from one of the most important jobs in the British media to one of most important jobs in American journalism, exactly what he knew ? and when he knew it ?could be critical to his future career.

In a statement last week, Thompson said he had "never heard any allegations or received any complaints" about Savile during his time as BBC director-general, from 2004 to 2012.

But an Oct. 7 story by London's Sunday Times appeared to contradict him, reporting that a BBC journalist had tipped Thompson off about the Savile investigation.

The Sunday Times is published by News International, an arm of Rupert Murdoch's global News Corp. empire, and has no corporate ties to The New York Times.

Thompson acknowledged being warned about what was happening at "Newsnight" by a BBC journalist during a company cocktail reception late last year, but he said the journalist never "set out what allegations 'Newsnight' were investigating or had been investigating."

Thompson said he followed the matter up with other executives who told him the "Newsnight" investigation was canceled on journalistic grounds ? suggesting that they believed there wasn't enough evidence or news interest for an expose on Savile.

"I had no reason to believe that anyone in the BBC was withholding controversial or incriminating material," Thompson wrote in his letter to Wilson, the lawmaker.

Wilson told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he has written to Thompson again seeking more answers.

"There are questions about how much the journalist told him about the 'Newsnight' investigation that need to be cleared up as quickly as possible," Wilson said, adding that Thompson said he is willing to answer questions before the parliamentary committee looking into the matter and the BBC's own inquiry.

He said Thompson's fitness to serve as The New York Times chief depends on the outcome of the various inquiries.

Those inquiries have drawn the attention of The New York Times' public editor, Margaret Sullivan, who on Tuesday asked Times readers to evaluate the incoming chief's answers.

"How likely is it that he knew nothing?" she asked. "A director general of a giant media company is something like a newspaper's publisher. Would a publisher be very likely to know if an investigation of one of its own people on sexual abuse charges had been killed?"

In a carefully worded paragraph that followed, she raised the issue of Thompson's fitness to serve as The New York Times chief.

"His integrity and decision-making are bound to affect The Times and its journalism ? profoundly," she wrote. "It's worth considering now whether he is the right person for the job, given this turn of events."

Sullivan said while finding an answer was "not as easy as it sounds ... all these questions ought to be asked."

Clever Layout Showcased by Original Family Home in Spain

Duch-Piz? Architects completed House for Kika and Xisco, an intriguing looking modern residence in Palma, Spain. especially developed for a family with five children. An optimum indoor-outdoor connection was one of the main objectives when planning, the residence featuring plenty of windows and opening up towards a small courtyard garden and a larger green space on the western side. The building also unexpected piercings in the roof and floors, for a good light flow.

Coming out with a perfect layout for the residence came with its challenges: ?The program, for a family with five children, requires the maximal optimization. This effort is visible in the sections: the fixed banks are also skylights that allow the light pass through and get to the basement (one of the best places in the house), the staircase becomes a big library, bedrooms communicate with sliding doors so that five bedrooms are grouped into two galleries?. How would you comment on this project?s appearance and structure?

How Much Of Kim Zolciak Will We See On The Upcoming RHOA ...

Since she was not part of the official cast photo for season five of Real Housewives of Atlanta, many have wondered just how much of Kim Zolciak we will be seeing in the upcoming season. Due to her pregnancy and new family, Kim filmed a lot less than she has for previous seasons but will still be making appearances here and there!

Apparently Kim has been focusing on being a family woman and while filming, she had to be under a lot of rest due to her pregnancy. A source close to production tells Wetpaint, ?She didn?t film that much. It was a difficult pregnancy and she was under doctors orders to rest. She was happy to be home nesting. She?s 100 percent in family mode right now. She was grateful for the chance to withdraw from a lot of the nastiness that sometimes comes with filming the show.?

Kim fans have nothing to worry as she will be working on her own spinoff show! It was clear from last season that Kim was not as invested in the show and was focused more on her life at home with her new husband and baby.

Will you miss seeing Kim Zolciak have a big role on RHOA?

Ex-NY Giant Taylor says sex case accuser 'pretty'

NEW YORK (AP) ? NFL great Lawrence Taylor, reliving a night to forget, admitted on Wednesday that he paid for sex with a "very, very pretty" prostitute in 2010 but denied accusations that he ignored obvious signs she was a teen runaway in distress.

Taylor, 53, told a Manhattan jury at a civil trial that he had a history of hiring women for "company" when on the road but didn't expect them to automatically have sex with him.

"I still like the chase," Taylor testified. But he added, "I like to stack the odds in my favor. ... I don't like to work too hard."

The former New York Giants linebacker was arrested in 2010 after having sex with the then-16-year-old girl in a hotel room in Montebello, just north of New York City. He's serving six months of probation after pleading guilty last year to misdemeanor charges of sexual misconduct and patronizing an underage prostitute.

His accuser, Cristina Fierro, claims that an abusive pimp forced her to have sex with Taylor for $300. She sued Taylor in federal court in Manhattan, claiming he should be held accountable.

The Brooklyn-born Fierro, 19, wept while testifying on Wednesday that a hulking Taylor refused to stop having sex with her, even after she told him it hurt and tried to push him away.

"I kept telling him I didn't want to be there," she said. "He's much bigger than me. I couldn't do anything."

Taylor, in his testimony, painted a much different picture, saying he was respectful to Fierro after a friend arranged for her to go to his room after midnight in the spring of 2010. During "chit chat," she told him she was 19 years old and Dominican, he said.

"I thought she was very, very pretty," he said. "I thought she was a cute girl. ... I thought she was very sexy."

He testified that he tried to perform oral sex on her but stopped when she resisted "because a lot of island girls don't like that."

But after that, "She didn't seem to have a problem," he said. "She didn't tell me to stop."

Taylor's lawyer has called Fierro's lawsuit, seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, "a money grab" because of Taylor's fame.

Taylor, who lives in Broward County, Fla., led the Giants to Super Bowl titles in 1987 and 1991. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.

The Associated Press doesn't normally publish the names of accusers in sexual-assault cases unless they agree to be named or identify themselves publicly, as Fierro has done.

Taylor was expected to resume testifying on Thursday.

Israel says 79 rockets fired at it from Gaza

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Palestinians fired dozens of rockets into Israel from Gaza on Wednesday and an Israeli air strike killed a militant, a day after the Emir of Qatar made a rare visit to the enclave's Hamas leadership.

Hamas claimed responsibility for some of the rocket and mortar bomb attacks, prompting some Israelis to wonder whether it had been emboldened by the Qatari visit on Tuesday that broke the Islamist group's diplomatic isolation.

In recent months, Hamas has largely held its fire when other militant factions have launched cross-border rocket attacks, but the sudden upsurge in violence stoked fears that the hostilities could escalate further.

Hamas accused Israel of stepping up air strikes in the Gaza Strip, a move it said was meant to convey Israeli anger over Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani's visit, and pledged to "continue to hold a gun ... until Palestine is liberated".

Israel said it was "astounding" that Qatar, a U.S.-allied Gulf state, would take sides in the Palestinian dispute and endorse Hamas, branded by the West as a terrorist group. Hamas seized the Gaza Strip in 2007 from fighters loyal to the Fatah faction of Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Some analysts saw the Qatari ruler's trip, the first by any national leader to Gaza since Hamas took over, as an attempt to build bridges between the group and the West and coax it into the peace camp amid Arab turmoil across the Middle East.

A Palestinian official said Egypt was trying to mediate a truce.

"The contacts Cairo made resulted in a verbal promise by Hamas to calm the situation down and Israel said it was monitoring calm on the ground and would refrain from attacks unless it was subject to rocket fire from Gaza," said the official, who is close to the talks.

Israeli officials had no immediate comment. Previous rounds of cross-border attacks have usually fizzled out in days, with both Israel and Hamas seemingly aware of the risks of ramping up the low-intensity conflict.

Israel's three-week-long invasion of the Gaza Strip, launched in 2008 with the declared aim of curbing rocket launches, drew international criticism over a heavy Palestinian casualty toll.

Though hostile to Israel, Hamas has mostly sought to avoid direct clashes as it shores up its rule in the face of more radical challengers and seeks potential allies abroad.

NETANYAHU VISITS ANTI-MISSILE SITE

In a second day of violence, a Hamas militant was killed on Wednesday in an air strike, which Israel said was intended to stop rocket launches. On Tuesday, Israel killed three Hamas men, saying they had either launched attacks or were about to do so.

In southern Israel, three agricultural workers were wounded when a Palestinian rocket exploded near them.

An Israeli military spokeswoman, said 79 projectiles had been fired at Israel and that the Iron Dome system had intercepted eight of them. She said several homes had been damaged by Palestinian rockets.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is seeking a renewed mandate in Israel's January 22 election, visited an Iron Dome anti-missile battery near the southern city of Ashkelon on Wednesday and threatened stronger Israeli military action in Gaza.

"We did not choose this escalation, nor did we initiate it, but if it continues, we are prepared for a much wider and deeper operation," he said, pledging to press on with "targeted attacks" against militants preparing to fire rockets.

Israel kept schools shut in communities near the fenced Gaza boundary and residents were urged to remain indoors.

Hamas has refused to renounce violence or recognize Israel's right to exist, and is ostracized by the Quartet of Middle East mediators comprising the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia.

However, Hamas has said it would accept a truce with Israel in return for a state in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Boeing missile takes out electronics without touching them

2 hrs.

A new weapon being developed by Boeing hopes to defeat targets without actually destroying them. Instead, it uses a powerful microwave burst to disable electronic devices as it flies overhead.

The idea of the "electro-magnetic pulse," or EMP, is a popular one in science fiction: for decades, guns and missiles have disabled starships and facilities by shutting down their electronics ? but the real thing has proven a bit more difficult to create.

Researchers at Boeing's Phantom Works succeeded last week when tests of their new weapon proved it to be even more potent than expected. They call it the Counter-electronics High-powered Advanced Missile Project, or CHAMP.

The tests in Utah had the missile buzzing test structures full of electronics and cameras. The idea is that targeting these buildings with an intense burst of microwave radiation would knock out any electronically-controlled systems within.

And that's what happened ? in spades. The CHAMP worked so well that even the cameras set up to record the effects inside the buildings were shut down. Such a weapon would be invaluable against enemy infrastructure like radar and missile launch sites.

How long the electronics are disrupted for would vary widely depending on how the electronics work and?how hard they were hit. The monitors shown in the video at Boeing's announcement of the tests only shut down for a few seconds, but something more complex, like?an interdependent network of computers and power sources, could be taken offline for much longer or even disabled completely.

Either way, the CHAMP was demonstrated successfully, and it will be a very useful tool when ordinary munitions are too risky to employ. The research was conducted in partnership with the U.S.?Air Force Research Laboratory and Raytheon Ktech.

Natural Ways To Quit Smoking - Huffington Post

It only takes 20 minutes of secondhand smoke exposure before breathing is impaired, a new study shows.

Researchers from the University of Athens, the Hellenic Cancer Society and the Harvard School of Public Health had 15 healthy study participants go inside a chamber meant to simulate a bar or car filled with secondhand smoke particulates for 20 minutes to see how their breathing was impaired.

In just that short amount of time, air flow through the participants' airways was impeded.

"The observed short-term effects of secondhand smoke tell us that even a short exposure is indeed harmful for normal airways," study researcher Dr. Panagiotis Behrakis, M.D., FCCP, of the University of Athens, said in a statement.

The new findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians; because the study has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, findings should be regarded as preliminary.

Similarly, a study published in 2007 in the American Journal of Public Health showed that cancer-causing NNK -- a compound that comes from the smoke of cigarettes -- builds up by 6 percent every hour in bar- and restaurant-workers who are exposed to secondhand smoke during their night shifts, TIME reported.

"We were somewhat surprised by the immediacy of the effect and the fact that we could measure the average hourly increase," study researcher Michael Stark, principal investigator at the Mulmomah County Health Department in Oregon, told TIME.

Earlier this year, a study in the American Journal of Public Health showed just how many lives secondhand smoke claims in the U.S. each year: 42,000, Livescience reported.

Trying to kick the habit? Click through the slideshow for some natural options that could help:

  • Mindfulness

Mindfulness training helped participants in a <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21723049" target="_hplink">2011 <em>Drug and Alcohol Dependence</em> study</a> to stay off cigarettes. That study included 88 people who smoked 20 cigarettes daily, on average, who were split up into two groups: One received four weeks of mindfulness training, while the other group went through four weeks of an <a href="http://www.ffsonline.org/" target="_hplink">American Lung Association stop-smoking program</a>. The researchers found that more of those who went through the mindfulness training smoked fewer cigarettes -- and stayed off them -- than those who went through the other stop-smoking program. The mindfulness training included <a href="http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/minding-the-body/201204/can-mindfulness-help-you-quit-smoking" target="_hplink">realizing when you're facing a craving</a>, accepting it, thinking about what's happening and then taking note of the sensation (whether it's tightness or pressure), <em>Psychology Today</em> reported.

  • Weight Lifting

Jogging and bicycling aren't the only exercises that could help you kick the smoking habit -- <em>Shape</em> magazine reported that <a href="http://www.shape.com/latest-news-trends/study-says-weight-lifting-can-help-smokers-quit-and-lose-weight" target="_hplink">weightlifting could help</a>, too. The research, published in the journal <em>Nicotine & Tobacco Research</em>, showed that doing two hour-long weightlifting sessions for 12 weeks <em>plus</em> undergoing treatment to quit smoking was linked with greater success in quitting smoking, compared with just undergoing the stop-smoking treatment.

  • Eat Produce

<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/10/fruits-vegetables-quit-smoking-smokers-tobacco_n_1581465.html" target="_hplink">Eating lots of fruits and veggies</a> could help smokers maintain a tobacco-free lifestyle, according to research from the University of Buffalo. The study, published in the journal <em>Nicotine and Tobacco Research</em>, included 1,000 smokers ages 25 and older. The researchers had the participants answer surveys about their smoking habits and their fruit and vegetable intake. Then, they followed up with them 14 months later and asked them if they used tobacco over the past month. The researchers found that there was a relationship between the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/10/fruits-vegetables-quit-smoking-smokers-tobacco_n_1581465.html" target="_hplink">amount of fruits and vegetables</a> the study participants ate, and the likelihood that they quit -- and stayed off -- tobacco. In fact, people who ate the most produce in the study were three times more likely to report that they'd been tobacco free in the previous month. The researchers also found a link between increased produce consumption and taking longer in the day to have the first cigarette, smoking fewer cigarettes, and decreased dependence on nicotine (based on test results).

  • Acupuncture And Hypnosis

A review of studies suggests there is evidence that <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/07/acupuncture-quit-smoking-hypnosis_n_1497348.html" target="_hplink">acupuncture and hypnosis</a> can work to help quit smoking, Reuters reported. Researchers, who published their findings in the <em>American Journal of Medicine</em>, said that other options -- like medications and counseling -- should be tried first, but that <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/11/hypnosis-quit-smoking_n_1248444.html" target="_hplink">hypnosis</a> and acupuncture could help if those options don't work, or if people don't want to go on medications, according to Reuters.

  • Text Messages

Who knew your phone could be used to help you quit smoking? A recent study published in the <a href="http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(11)60701-0/abstract" target="_hplink">journal <em>The Lancet</em></a> showed that smokers who enrolled in a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/05/smoking-text-message_n_888188.html" target="_hplink">program called "txt2stop"</a> -- where they received encouraging text messages to quit smoking -- were twice as likely to kick the habit after six months, compared with smokers who didn't get any encouraging messages. In the study, conducted by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, one group was able to text words like "lapse" and "crave" to a phone number, and <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-27083_3-20075843-247/want-to-quit-smoking-try-text-message-support/" target="_hplink">received an encouraging text</a> message in return, CNET reported. The other group of people, however, only got one text message every two weeks, and that message just thanked them for being part of the study.

Americans use more efficient and renewable energy technologies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Americans used less energy in 2011 than in the previous year due mainly to a shift to higher-efficiency energy technologies in the transportation and residential sectors. Meanwhile, less coal was used but more natural gas was consumed according to the most recent energy flow charts released by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Wind power saw the biggest jump from .92 quadrillion BTU, or quads, in 2010 up to 1.17 quads in 2011. (BTU or British Thermal Unit is a unit of measurement for energy and is equivalent to about 1.055 kilojoules).

"Wind energy jumped significantly because, as in previous years, many new wind farms came online," said A.J. Simon, an LLNL energy systems analyst who develops the flow charts using data provided by the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration. "This is the result of sustained investment in wind power."

Hydroelectricity also saw an increase going from 2.51 quads in 2010 up to 3.17 quads in 2011.

Hydroelectricity jumped significantly in 2011 because 2011 saw large amounts of precipitation in the Western U.S. Hydroelectric dams were able to produce at their maximum levels while keeping reservoirs full. Similar levels of hydroelectric production were seen in 1997, 1998 and 1999 due to wet years.

Overall, U.S. energy use in 2011 equaled 97.3 quads compared to the 98 quads used in 2010. Most of the energy was tied to coal, natural gas and petroleum.

From 2010 to 2011, use of coal fell dramatically, use of oil (petroleum) fell slightly and use of natural gas increased slightly from 24.65 quads in 2010 to 26.9 quads in 2011.

"Sustained low natural gas prices have prompted a shift from coal to gas in the electricity generating sector," Simon said. "Sustained high oil prices have likely driven the decline in oil use over the past 5 years as people choose to drive less and purchase automobiles that get more miles per gallon."

The majority of energy use in 2011 was used for electricity generation (39.2 quads), followed by transportation, industrial, commercial and residential consumption. However, energy use in the residential, commercial and transportation sectors decreased while industrial energy use increased if only slightly.

"With the advent of shale gas, it appears that natural gas prices in the United States may remain lower than their historical averages for many years into the future," Simon said. "This has prompted many gas users in the industrial and electricity generating sector to switch from coal or oil to natural gas when it is technically possible, but might not have been economical at higher gas prices."

3 Top Ways To Attract Comments On Your Blog | Geek Business

Potential clients and advertisers are probably visiting your blog every day. I know they visit mine. They keep contacting me about guest posts, banner ads, placing affiliate links on my blogs, and best of all, hiring me to write articles for their sites. Sometimes they pay me in excess of ?80.00 just to put a link on my site, tucked away into one of my articles.

Do you know how potential clients and advertisers judge whether they want to do business with you? It?s exactly the same way you?d judge the health of a site. You?d look at the Google PR rating, you may look at the Alexa rank, you?ll look for social media proof (how many people liked the blog on Facebook ? for example) and you will look at the amount of comments each blog post gets.

The most important element demonstrating how deeply people interact with a site (of the ones mentioned above) is how many comments others leave on a given blog. I have blogs ranging from PR4 ratings to PR1 ratings. Sometimes the PR 2s and 3s get more blog traffic than the higher rated ones. This proves that rating isn?t everything. Clients want to know that their links will be seen and clicked on. Get more comments on your blog, and you?ll most likely be contacted by more clients. How do you do this?

Ask a question in your post title or at the end of your articles

This one may seem like a simple thing, but it works. Many people visit your site daily, but only a few of them leave comments. Why is this so? Check the posts on your sites with the most comments and see what they?re like. I?m sure that they either had elements of the other points raised below, or they directly asked questions.

You may not want to be too controversial because this could lead to losing readers if it?s not handled properly. However, some of your posts should definitely ask moving questions in the titles. All of them should ask the reader for their opinions and finish with a question (about the article) they just can?t resist answering.

Make your site a resource

A sure-fire way of getting comments on your blog is to make your site a resource. People love reading and sharing resources. Even if your entire site isn?t a resource, take time to write in-depth articles that offer vital information to readers in your niche. Lists are great, but not all your posts should be list type. Do you run a blog about web traffic? A fantastic resource for your readers would be to list 50 blogs that allow you do-follow links in their comments (for example). If one blog post (out of ten) is a resource, you?ll be getting comments for years from them.

Leave comments

This one is not as obvious as it seems. Bloggers set up their blogs, write great content, and have sound SEO. There are thousands of other blogs in your niche and everyone is fighting for clients, readers and traffic. People won?t come to you, no matter how great your site is. You have to go to them first. Leave helpful comments on their blogs and ask them to pop by your site after a while. Comments take time to build up. You have to make the first move.
Do you have other ways of inviting people to make comments on your blog?

7 Reasons to Try Interval Training Now - Shape

Interval training is the ultimate fitness mashup, blending the speeds of both the tortoise and the hare. The benefits of this workout ? pushing your pace, then slowing down to recover just so you can push your pace again ? will certainly motivate you to play with your speed. If you haven't already added them to your cardio workouts, here are seven benefits of interval training. While cardio exercise is necessary to losing fat all over your body, according to research published in the International Journal of Obesity, interval training targets your waistline. Adding bursts of speed can help you lose stubborn abdominal fat, which is a boon for your skinny jeans and your overall health. Having a waist size over 35 inches if you're a woman puts you at a higher risk for heart disease and some cancers.

Got a Need For Speed? The most obvious benefit, but still worth noting, is that interval training will make you faster. Picking up your pace when training with intervals helps to increase your speed, whether you run, bike, or swim. If you're working toward a personal record for an upcoming race, then don't skip your speed work. Here are interval workouts for biking, swimming, and running. Triathlon, anyone?

Up Your Afterburn Interval training increases the after-burn effect. This means that postexercise, your body burns more calories, even during rest or sleep, after doing intervals than after doing a steadily paced workout. Science suggests that to maximize this effect, you should alternate between three minutes of speed and three minutes of recovery, or slow bouts, for 30 to 60 minutes ? after warming up, of course.

Save Time No doubt about it ? interval training is efficient. Pushing your cardiovascular system by adding intervals means you burn more calories in less time. By alternating between fast and slow, you can work out harder and longer than if you were just pushing your max speed. Efficient intervals mean you can spend less time at the gym and more time in the sauna.

Go Longer Even though interval workouts might be shorter than your other workouts, this form of exercise will increase your endurance. Long runs and rides will be easier if interval training is part of your regular exercise routine. Another bonus is that climbing hills will feel easier too.

Decrease Your Resting Heart Rate The fewer times your heart beats per minute, the less wear and tear there is on the mechanics of the organ. Interval training makes your heart more efficient, so it pumps more blood with each beat, reducing the number of beats per minute.

Interval Training Works With All Forms of Cardio Intervals may not be for everyone; it's best to have a strong cardio base before pushing yourself with intervals. And interval training doesn't have to mean sprinting. Use the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) to moderate your speed and effort. However, intervals can be done with every kind of cardio. You can play with your speed on the elliptical and on the rowing machine. I like to think that the walk/run programs are an introduction to intervals.

10 Ways to Impress Your In-Laws

The relationship with one?s in-laws is pretty delicate and fraught with many challenges. If you handle it effectively, then it can be one of the most pleasant relationships of your life. So to make the right impressions, here are 10 ways to impress your in-laws.

1. Dress smartly

Clothes do make the first impression. Wear smart clothes that flatter your physique and bring out the best in your personality. Most importantly, wear proper clothes as per the occasion.

2. Sound intelligent without being arrogant

There?s a fine line between sounding intelligent and arrogant. Intelligence impresses people whereas arrogance antagonizes them. So just be careful to stay on the right side.

3. Remember their birthdays/anniversaries

Everyone likes to be wished on their birthdays and anniversaries. It just shows how thoughtful you are and that you care enough to wish. So include their special days in your calendar and make sure to wish them through a simple call, sweet card or flowers.

4. Show appreciation

Acknowledge and appreciate their good gestures or acts. Do not assume that they would know. Show your appreciation by mentioning it.

5. Invite them over for lunch/dinner

Invite and impress them with whatever you cook the best! Make them go gaga over your favorite pie or steak. The best way to reach anyone?s heart is through their stomach!
