?European and Asian Creative Sensibilities in the Age of Digital Media?
This talk explores issues of artistic creativity, production, distribution and impact across different cultural spheres. Some of the cultural phenomena discussed include the transformation of books-movies-and-games as we knew them in the 20th century, today?s instant multicultural online world, and the ubiquitous hobby of interactive-movie-making. The talk is illustrated with a few of Isaac?s recent projects including ?Sudden Nature,? ?Mayon: The Volcano Princess,? and ?Earth Girl: The Natural Disaster Fighter.? The presentation is wrapped up with a quick review of some of the essential creative skills required to succeed in today?s creative worlds of gaming, film and animation.
Speaker?s Bio
Isaac Kerlow is an artist and filmmaker whose work deals with change, abstraction, riddles and the human condition. He is a pioneer of digital art, and continues to create with digital technology and traditional techniques. Isaac has has been based in Singapore for over seven years where he has been promoting professional artistic practice, intercultural creativity and personal expression. Isaac is the Founding Dean of the School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and currently an Artist-in-Residence and Principal Investigator at the Earth Observatory of Singapore where he develops and produces a variety of interdisciplinary artistic projects.
Between 1995-2004 Isaac worked at Disney, in Los Angeles, experimenting with new media in entertainment, moviemaking, animation and games. In his early academic career Isaac was the Founding Chairman of the Department of Computer Graphics and Interactive Media at Pratt Institute in New York City, and the youngest full professor ever tenured at that institution. Isaac is also the author of several best-selling books, including the successful 4th edition of The Art of 3D Computer Animation and Effects published by Wiley and translated to Chinese, Japanese and Russian. Isaac is an active participant in international seminars and festivals. He was recently Festival Director for the SIGGRAPH?2010 Computer Animation Festival, Artist-in-Residence at Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing, China, and has been on the Advisory Board of FMX and the technology committee of the American Society of Cinematographers.
