Architectural Engineering Students Society organizes first Green ...

Green Week 2013 will run from the 24-26th March and every day brings new events, linked together via specific themes aimed to raise awareness about environmental sustainability. The event aims to increase the students? awareness regarding the preservation of the environment and applying green strategies in their daily life.

In addition to UAEU student participation, more than 30 students from the GCC and other universities have participated in the event, along with three schools from Al Ain.

The program started with a speech given by the Dean of Engineering in which he acknowledged the efforts of AESS and the Architectural Engineering Department for organizing such a significant event that encouraged the exchange of knowledge between students from different countries and at different levels. He also said, ?Green Week is about promoting an issue which is really serious but at the same time encouraging people to have fun while learning about it. People get to think about what they can do in their day to day lives to make a difference. It can be as simple as switching off the lights, recycling a little and thinking about travelling in more eco-friendly ways.?

Professor Mohamed Yousif Baniyas, UAEU Provost Chief Academic Officer, also attended the opening ceremony and commented, ?This event enables the University to celebrate sustainability efforts, raise awareness of initiatives taking place and inspire further action. It also allows the students to gain new engagement and motivation beyond the criteria in the workbook which enhances the student experience.?

Three lectures with green titles were presented: Emirati Sustainable Life Style, Population Growth and Footprint, and Green Buildings in Dubai. The program also included three panel discussions to cover important topics such as Sustain Emirati Marine Life, Saving the Environment, and Nuclear Power and its Effect.

To encourage students? participation in cooperative groups and to fulfill their interests, several workshops were conducted, including Photography, Recycling, Art of Collage, Clay, Sculpture, and Planting, all focusing around the theme of sustainability.

The event included a green exhibition which was fully designed and decorated from recycled materials. Different organizations, institutes, societies, schools and other groups; such as Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs, Masdar Institute, The Abu Dhabi Centre for Waste Management, Emirati Marine Life Photography Group, Environment Friends Society, Liwa International School, presented their green products, experiences, and materials in the exhibition.

To encourage students? participation at different levels, three competitions were conducted with a theme of reuse, reduce and recycle materials which included: Fashion Show; Hat Design; and Recycled Materials competitions.

The main aim of the event was not only to promote environmental issues but also to create awareness around the campus with lots of fun activities to involve as many people as possible.

The event also included two guided field trips for the delegates. The first trip was to Sheikh Zayed Palace, and Al Ain Wildlife Park; and the second trip was to Masdar City, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and Ferrari World in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.
